SIDNEY CHARLES - GOING DOWN EP

DJ and producer Sidney Charles Hurricane Vieljans, more commonly, and simply, known as Sidney Charles, has just released his latest EP titled Going Down. Recognized as one of Resident Advisors Top 100 Most Charted Artists of 2013, Charles incorporates soulful and hip-hop elements into his tracks that give them a spice not necessarily seen in the world of techno. The diversity in his tracks keep him busy in the studio alongside his DJing schedule. This new EP looks to take the world by storm, but what do you expect from a guy with "Hurricane" for a name. Listen to the EP below and hear more on Soundcloud.

UP AND COMING - TOMB BOSS

Even with just 2 tracks up on his Soundcloud, we think Tomb Boss has something special. Hailing from Melbourne (surprise surprise) this guy has a masterful way of blending a little bit of indie, with a dash of new funk, all rolled up in the world of electronic music. His Soundcloud claims he is a future house savant, which, maybe we won't argue with. We also noticed when giving a quick scan through his Twitter, that back in April he made a mention of an EP, so Tomb Boss, we're waiting...

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT - CHROMEO

Chromeo is a Canadian electrofunk duo comprised of David Macklovitch (right) and Patrick Gemayel. The guys have been putting out music since 2002, with their first hit single "You're So Gangsta", a track utilizing the saxophone that has become so popular recently. They met in college and describe themselves as "the only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture." Chromeo has been pretty steady in the album releases with about one every 3 years, their most recent of which was released just this year titled "White Women". If you haven't heard their single "Jealous" in some way, shape, or form, then you haven't been paying attention. This track skyrocketed up the charts when it was released and has been remixed by everyone from Dillon Francis, to Benny Benassi, to Savoy. You can listen to those remixes on their Soundcloud

Check them out on their "Frequent Flyer Tour" going on now!

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT - DOM DOLLA

When we highlight a certain artist, we like to listen through most of their work and select a few of favorites to show all of you. With Dom Dolla we planned on doing the same thing but after about 2 hours of going through his Soundcloud, we couldn't decide which tracks we were into the most. So we made a playlist of ten. Yes, we are highlighting ten tracks from a guy whose biggest claim to fame so far is a remix for The Aston Shuffle. Can you guess where he is from? If you said Melbourne, Australia, you're right. There is something in the water out there. We would go say check out his Soundcloud, but we've pretty much uploaded all of it on the playlist below. The guy has his own unique twist for every track that keeps you guessing. He's got house, progressive, deep house, some funk, swing, and the kitchen sink. Check him out below.

DEPRESSION AND DANCE MUSIC

Fame, fortune, adoration. Private planes, limos, parties. These are what you see when you look at the worlds top DJs. Jet setting from the coast of Ibiza to play your next set for tens of thousands of fans in Paris. It all seems perfect on the outside. Images and videos from any number of festivals, concerts, and clubs show EDM as a medium for happiness and joy. The lights, the sounds, the energy all invigorate the senses and create a reality that can be far different from any real-life experiences. In this incredible article DJ Paul Thomas and FunkAgenda confront the stigma of mental illness and depression in an eye-opening, personally revealing way. The guys open up about their own personal struggles with depression and how clubland and EDM allowed them as escape from their disease. Get educated, read the article from Decoded Magazine HERE.

Rudimental is hands-down one of our favorite bands here at NYMM. The quartet, out of Hackney, London, have been producing for years and consistently manage to blend different genres of music, including liquid funk, jungle, soul, blues, and dance, into electronic masterpieces.

The group, made up of Piers Agget, Amir Amor, Kesi Dryden, and Leon Rolle, has recently risen to fame through their track "Feel the Love" (below), which featured John Newman best known for his track "Love Me Again". Since then, the guys have released numerous single and have been won several awards including The Brit Award and Mobo Award for Best Album, in addition to receiving numerous nominations at the MTV Europe Music Awards and have achieved multiple Platinum awards for record sales.  Check out some of their singles and our favorites below!

FUNK FRIDAY

Today's Funk Friday we'll be checking out some nu-disco. Nu-disco obvious is a collaboration between disco era trends, including synth-heavy and P-funk, and electronic music. While the sub-genre has been around since the 70's and 80's, nu-disco has only been more mainstream recently with the stylings of groups like Daft Punk and Breakbot. Check out some of my favorite nu disco below.

FUNK FRIDAY

The use of electronica in music makes nearly every song mixable. This versatility has led to an incredible amount of sub-genres within the electronic music scene. The overwhelming majority of well-known electronic music falls in the big room/house/dubstep side leaving many other tracks and mixes unknown. Funk Friday is dedicated to these  sub-genres; everything including swing, funk, blues, groove, and more. Check out some of my favorites below.

Defunk classifies his track, "The Waltz", as a groove track. The groove sub-genre of electronic music is considered more of and overarching classification stemming from the use of drums, guitar, and keyboard as opposed to heavy synth or bass.

"The Viper" by Play Dirty is heavy on the swing loops, iconic to the period of the flappers and big bands of the 1920's, giving it the four-on-the-floor baseline and fusing it with jazz loops gives it the electroswing sound.
