EDM DICTIONARY

________________________________________________________

House - This is the most generalizing and popular form of modern electronic music. House music originated in Chicago in the early 1980s and fanned out around the world, transforming into the modern sounds we hear today. It is said to have gotten its name from the Chicago nightclub "The Warehouse", which existed from 1977 to 1983. It is often characterized by the prominent kick-drum on every beat - also known as the four-on-the-floor beat. There are dozens of sub-genres of house, but we will focus on more of the popular ones.

Acid House - Keeping with the overarching genre of house, acid house uses the same kick-drum beat but infuses a more repetitive, trance-like style, in conjunction with spoken lines in place of the usual lyrics. It's core stems from the use of a "squelch" sound developed   around the 1980s. DIMI - Acid House Mix.

Big Room - The popularity of clubs, festivals, and EDM itself has given rise to the new genre of big room. It takes the melodic nature of progressive house and combines it with the energy of electro-house and trance, creating emotional build-ups followed by energetic, melodic drops. Marco V & Christian Burns - Frozen Heart

Deep House - This form of house has been increasing in popularity as the incorporation of   lyrics has become more prevalent. Often described as the "sexy" form of house, deep house incorporates elements of jazz-funk and is kept at a slower 100-120 BPM. Blonde - Foolish (Dansson Remix)

Dubstep - Most often referred to as the genre that sounds like a broken computer. It is typically easier to identify using your ears, but putting it into words is a little more difficult. For the audiophiles out there, dubstep rhythms are usually syncopated and often incorporate tupulets. Tempo is faster, between 138-142 with a clap or snare incorporated every third beat. Skrillex - Bangarang

Dutch House - As the genre of house music spread, different regions have adopted their own stylings and sounds unique that specific region. The EDM scene in Europe is second-to-none and part of the reason is their own adaption of the genre. Dutch house is typically made up of more complex percussion and drum beats, short riffs, high pitched synths, and the dramatic build-up which is so popular in modern house. Chuckie - Who Is Ready to Jump

Glitch/Fidget House - As the name implies, this sub-genre has sounds like the beats are glitchy, or skipping. It tends to have a very erratic melody often produced by altering the pitch of percussion instruments. Sugarbeats - Superfine

Garage House - This is one of the original forms of house with its roots coming from Chicago in the 1980s. It is generally piano oriented, with a sound deriving from disco and soul, incorporating a heavy use of vocals - typically female. Tony Humphries - Oh Adam

Moombathon - Like deep house, moombathon is kept at a slower 108-112 BPM. Simply put, it is 50% Dutch house, 50% reggaeton. Major Lazer - Get Free

Nu-disco - Like the name would lead you to believe, nu-disco takes a renewed look at the disco era of the 1970s, and infuses the basic elements of house. The Knocks - Get Down 2 Get Up

Progressive House - Another one of the most popular modern adaptations of house is progressive house. It is characterized by the accelerating peaks, dramatic build-ups, and the drop. It is about layering different sounds on top of one another and continually bringing them in and out of the mix. Calvin Harris - Summer

Swing House - One of the more lively and upbeat forms of house gets its foundation from the swing music of the early 1920. Commonly, there are elements of jazz and big band incorporated into the four-on-the-floor beats of electronic music. Beretech - Kind of Swing

Trance - This style of electronic music originated in Germany in the 1990s. It is typically characterised by its 125-160 BPMs, repeating melodic phrases and musical form that builds up and down throughout the track. Just like house, there are many sub-genres including techno, chill, and liquid. Kaskade - 4am

Trap - Simply put,  trap could be classified as the hip-hop/rap of the electronic music world. Not so simply put, it is based on the use of an 808 Roland drum machine, pipe flutes, and gangsta synth leads. Gent and Jawns - Turn Up
